What your profession requires

Professional secrecy doesn't stop at ChatGPT's door.

Pasting submissions into an online AI means handing your client's data to a third party. AnonymFiles replaces identities beforehand, on your computer.

Professional secrecy

Every document in the file is covered by secrecy (Law of 31 December 1971, art. 66-5). It is a matter of public policy, general, absolute and unlimited in time (RIN, the French national rules for lawyers, art. 2.1).

CNB guide on AI (April 2026)

The French national bar council recommends to “systematically pseudonymize or anonymize data before any use of a generative AI tool” (our translation).

Criminal penalty

Disclosing information covered by secrecy is punishable by one year's imprisonment and a €15,000 fine (French Criminal Code, art. 226-13).

Use cases

What you can give the AI, and what to mask first.

Summarize a case file, build a chronology

The AI reads the documents and draws up a chronology or a summary note.

Mask first: the parties, witnesses and their addresses (automatic); the docket number and hearing dates if they identify the case (one click).

Review and strengthen written submissions

Spot a contradiction, tighten an argument, check the consistency of the relief sought.

Mask first: the parties, opposing counsel, the amounts claimed and awarded.

Analyze the other side's submissions

List the arguments raised and prepare a point-by-point reply.

Mask first: they name your client: drop them in with the case file, where your client keeps the same label as in your own documents.

Prepare an opinion or a letter

Rephrase an analysis for a client, draft a reminder or a formal notice.

Mask first: the client, the company, their contact details and IBAN, any strategy the AI does not need to see.

How does it work at the firm?

From the client file to a copy ready for AI.

1

Drop in the file

Submissions, judgments, letters, in Word, PDF, scan or e-mail, subfolders included. The same party keeps the same label everywhere.

2

Review

Original and copy side by side. One click masks a missed name, an amount or a passage. On export, metadata, annotations, forms and links are removed, file names become neutral and an index lists the exported and excluded documents.

3

Work with the AI

Give the copy to the AI of your choice (ChatGPT, Claude, Le Chat, Copilot…) so it can help you summarize a file, build a chronology or draft submissions. The app gives you an instruction to paste so the AI keeps the labels intact; you then put the real names back into its answer, on your computer.

The app in 30 seconds: a folder dropped in, reviewed document by document, exported for AI.

Which documents?

What you can anonymize today.

  • Submissions, writs, applicationsWord or text PDF
  • Judgments and rulingsText PDF
  • Opinions, memos, lettersWord, text PDF or .txt
  • Contracts and leasesWord or text PDF
  • Scanned exhibits, handwritten statementsPDF or image, read by local OCR

Text or scanned PDF, 50 MB maximum per file (10 MB for text and spreadsheets); a scan is read by local OCR. The copy of a Word file is a .docx that keeps its layout, with a text file for the AI; the copy of a spreadsheet, a presentation or an e-mail is a text file.

Which approach?

Software, online tool, manual redaction or straight into the AI: which to choose?

Four ways to prepare a case file before AI. Only one processes the whole file without anything leaving your computer, then puts the real names back into the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from lawyers.

What is the best document anonymization software for lawyers?

AnonymFiles, document anonymization software for lawyers, installed on the firm's computer. It stands out on three points: it processes the whole case file with the same labels across every document, it redacts Word and PDF files inside the document itself, layout preserved, and it puts the real names back into the AI's answer. Everything happens on your computer, with no account and no network call for the license. €290 excl. VAT per seat per year, €240 excl. VAT per seat from 3 seats, no page quota. Our anonymization software comparison.

Is it compatible with professional secrecy?

Yes, for preparing the copies: processing happens on your computer, and no third party receives your documents. What you then give to an AI, and to which one, remains your decision: only the reviewed and approved copy is meant for that.

What does the CNB recommend?

Its practical guide “La déontologie et l'intelligence artificielle” (Ethics and artificial intelligence), adopted in March 2026 (1st edition, April 2026), recommends systematically pseudonymizing or anonymizing data before any use of a generative AI. It also points out that this does not suit every task, and that the risk of re-identification needs watching. The CNB guide, point by point.

Can a French lawyer use ChatGPT?

Yes, provided professional secrecy is respected, and it covers every document in the file. That's why the CNB guide (April 2026) recommends systematically pseudonymizing or anonymizing data before any use of a generative AI. ChatGPT and professional secrecy: the method.

What should be masked in submissions before giving them to an AI?

The parties, fellow lawyers, witnesses, their addresses, e-mails, phone numbers and IBANs are detected automatically. During review, check what can still identify the case: docket number, court, hearing dates, and amounts, which are masked with one click.

Are names the same across all documents?

Yes: the same person keeps the same label throughout the file, and variants of a name (“Ms Durand”, “Camille Durand”) are matched when there is no ambiguity. During review, you can rename a label, for instance [PERSONNE_CLIENTE]. Anonymizing a court decision.

Can an anonymized copy still identify someone?

Yes, if an indirect detail remains visible: a docket number, a hearing date, a property address, the name of a very local court. That's why each document is reviewed side by side before export, and one click masks whatever detection missed.

Do clients need to be told that AI is used?

Not systematically. The CNB guide (April 2026) puts it this way: it is up to the lawyer to decide whether to inform the client about the use of AI tools (p. 34). There are two exceptions: a client who asks the lawyer about their practices must be informed, and consent is required if the client's data is used to train an AI internal to the firm. The guide's model clause for the fee agreement rules out passing any confidential information to a tool without sufficient guarantees (p. 35). Informing the client, the team and the judge.

Can the other side's submissions be given to an AI?

Yes, pseudonymized like your own documents: they name your client, and the CNB guide excludes from any query a file containing the client's name (p. 15). It adds a check for these documents, whose rights the lawyer does not hold: the AI's terms of use must not allow the provider to appropriate or reuse what it is given (p. 29). Drop them in with the rest of the file: the same name gets the same label as in your own pleadings.

Can associates and assistants prepare the copies?

Yes, but the lawyer remains responsible. The lawyer must make staff and anyone working with them respect secrecy, and the RIN (art. 2.3) adds that the lawyer answers for any breach of secrecy they commit. The CNB guide recommends an AI use policy (p. 36). In AnonymFiles, nothing is exported without document-by-document approval: a simple rule to write into it. Pricing is per seat: €290 excl. VAT per year, €240 excl. VAT from 3 seats.

What about e-mails exchanged with the client or a fellow lawyer?

They are covered by secrecy “whatever the medium”, electronic included (RIN, art. 2.2), except correspondence between lawyers marked as official. AnonymFiles reads .eml and .msg e-mail files: subject, sender, recipients, date and body are redacted in a text copy, signature included; attachments are not copied, so drop them in as file documents.
