Tacitum alternative: what the €79 Windows tool offers, and when to choose AnonymFiles
Tacitum is a French document anonymization tool, local, for Windows only, sold for €79 once per user. If you work on a Mac, if your case files contain Outlook emails or if you refuse any connection, even to activate a license, AnonymFiles is the alternative built for firms: 8 criteria out of 8 against 6.
What Tacitum offers
Tacitum presents itself as “offline document anonymisation software” for Windows, designed and published in France. It replaces each piece of data with a generic label such as [NAME], [EMAIL] or [ADDRESS], so the shared document becomes irreversible for its recipient, then lets you read the AI's answer back with the real values, on your computer.
- A one-time price. €79 once per user, every feature included, updates to the purchased version included; 10 free conversions, no sign-up and no credit card; Enterprise on request.
- Seven formats and scans. .docx, .pdf (text), .xlsx, .doc, .pptx, .txt and .csv; photos and image PDFs are read then anonymized, with recognition optimized for French and English. The .doc format requires Microsoft Word on the computer.
- Several files at once. A whole folder can be processed in one go, “formatting preserved”.
- Restore mode. On by default, it keeps an encrypted table only on the computer, tied to the Windows account, so you can get your values back.
- A review step. Before writing the file, Tacitum shows the detections so you can correct them.
- Simple distribution. Microsoft Store or direct installer, 64-bit Windows 10 and 11, about 2 GB of disk and 8 GB of memory recommended.
For a firm, four points are worth knowing. Tacitum only exists on Windows. Emails are not among its seven formats. Activating the license “requires a brief internet connection”, only the key being checked, according to its FAQ. Finally, its website shows generic labels such as [NAME] without saying whether two different people get two distinct labels: that is the question to ask if the AI must tell the parties of a case file apart.
Tacitum vs AnonymFiles: eight criteria
Here are both tools on the eight criteria of our comparison. Since our October 12 review, we have corrected an addition error in our grid: Tacitum's score goes from 5 to 5.5 out of 8. The review step it describes applies to scanned documents (half a point), and its website does not say in which formats restore mode puts the real names back (half a point).
| Criterion | Tacitum | AnonymFiles |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Local, no network call (license included) | ✗ activation | ✓ |
| 2. Whole case file, same placeholders throughout | ✓ | ✓ |
| 3. A firm's formats (scans, Word, Outlook emails, spreadsheets) | ◐ no emails | ✓ |
| 4. Word and PDF redacted in place | ✓ | ✓ |
| 5. Real names restored (Word, PDF) | ◐ format not stated | ✓ |
| 6. Original/copy review, document-by-document approval | ◐ scans only | ✓ |
| 7. Built for French regulated professions | ✓ | ✓ |
| 8. Fixed price, no quota | ✓ | ✓ |
| Score | 5.5/8 | 8/8 |
✓: yes. ◐: partly. ✗: no. n.c.: not disclosed by the publisher, scored zero. One point per criterion met, half a point when partly met, as in our comparison of anonymization software. For AnonymFiles on Windows, the detection models are downloaded once, on first processing, without any document text; on Mac, they are included.
Tacitum on Mac: which alternative?
As of October 14, 2026, Tacitum's website states “Available now for Windows 10 and 11” and offers neither a Mac version nor a date. On a Mac, you need another tool. AnonymFiles is built for Apple silicon Macs (M1 and later): the app is signed and notarized, the detection models are included and nothing connects. Among other local tools, Anoni also runs on macOS (see Anoni alternative).
When Tacitum is still a good choice
Tacitum is a good buy for a single Windows computer that anonymizes files from time to time, on a minimal budget: €79 once is less than a year's subscription. It also reads old Word .doc files on Windows, which AnonymFiles only converts on a Mac. If you handle neither emails nor case files where the AI must tell several people apart, and the brief activation connection does not bother you, Tacitum does the job.
Why AnonymFiles for a firm
AnonymFiles, a French document anonymization software, prepares a redacted copy of a whole case file on your computer before you hand it to ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot or Le Chat. Each person keeps the same placeholder in every document: Jean Martin becomes [PERSONNE_1] in the pleadings and in the emails alike. Scanned PDFs and images are read by local OCR and redacted in the image; a Word file comes out as a .docx redacted in place, layout preserved; .eml and .msg emails, .xlsx and .csv spreadsheets and .pptx presentations are supported. The original and the copy are shown side by side, and nothing is exported without document-by-document approval. After the AI, the app puts the real names back into its answer, as text, Word or PDF; the mapping table stays on the computer, encrypted (AES-256-GCM).
Network-wise: no account, no telemetry, a license checked on the computer with no network call; on Mac, the detection models are included and nothing connects. Details are on the security and network scope page, and the published detection benchmark explains how to check it yourself.
Price: €290 excl. VAT per seat per year for one or two seats, €240 excl. VAT per seat from three seats, a quote above twenty, with no page quota; 14-day trial. AnonymFiles is coming soon for Apple silicon Macs and Windows. It is built for professions bound by secrecy: document anonymization software for lawyers, for notaries, for chartered accountants, and the other profession pages below.
Compared with Tacitum, the difference comes down to four points: Apple silicon Macs as well as Windows; Outlook .eml and .msg emails; no connection at all, even for the license; numbered, stable placeholders ([PERSONNE_1], [PERSONNE_2]) from one document to the next, so the AI can follow who is who across the whole case file. In return, AnonymFiles is a yearly subscription and only reads .doc files on a Mac.

Is Tacitum available on Mac?

What do you think of Tacitum?
Tacitum is a serious and very affordable tool: €79 once, seven formats, scans, several files at once and an encrypted restore mode. Its limits for a firm: Windows only, no emails, online activation, and generic labels whose per-person numbering is not described.
Does Tacitum handle Outlook emails?
No: the seven formats listed by Tacitum are .docx, .pdf (text), .xlsx, .doc, .pptx, .txt and .csv, plus scans. AnonymFiles reads .eml and .msg emails: subject, sender, recipients, date and body are redacted, and attachments are never copied.
Tacitum or AnonymFiles: which is cheaper?
Tacitum, at purchase: €79 once per user. AnonymFiles is a subscription of €290 excl. VAT per seat per year, €240 from three seats, updates included while the subscription runs. The choice depends on the need: an occasional Windows computer or a firm that processes whole case files.
Does AnonymFiles read old .doc files?
On a Mac, yes: the .doc is converted locally to a recent Word file by the tool built into macOS, then redacted like a .docx; on Windows it is flagged and excluded, so just save it as .docx. Old .xls and .ppt files are read everywhere. Tacitum reads .doc files if Microsoft Word is installed.
